Open Question: Is applying for LIU at Brooklyn aiming too low?

I'm a Senior this year and looking at which colleges I want to apply to in a few months. I definitely do not have the best grades, but I guess they're better than some students.I'm also half Hispanic, which I have heard sometimes puts you at an advantage. My average GPA is 3.6, and I have taken a few AP classes and I am an editor for the school newspaper. My ACT and SAT scores are average, not below normal but not above. I really want to go to a college in New York (I Live in Los Angeles), but just looking at acceptance rates for the SUNY colleges is pretty discouraging - I initially wanted to apply for NYU, but I have since realized how completely unrealistic it is. I have since decided on applying for LIU, because it offers Journalism, the major I want and it is a few minutes outside of the city. The acceptance rate is pretty high, and I think that's why I've settled on it. I think that if I do apply, I will most likely get accepted because of the previous statistics for accepted students.
